Verizon vs. AT&T: Which is the Best Choice for You?
We're comparing them in five categories-- data speeds, coverage, plan, pricing, and perks.
Verizon has launched six brand new
unlimited plans and AT&T updated its premium plan.
Verizon and AT&T both offer four
types of plans o choose from-
1. 1. Cheapest Plans Possible
2. 2. Entry-Level Plans
3. 3. Mid-Level Plans
4. 4. Premium Plans
Let’s compare with the cheapest plans possible-
Here we have Verizon Welcome Unlimited and AT&T Value Plus with
the prices after taxes and fees.
Instead of Verizon Welcome Unlimited, you may want to consider Visible’s Base Plan.
Entry-Level Plans
Verizon’s Plan includes the most hotspot
data at 5GBs compared to 3GBs on AT&T. These plans stream vedio at 480p.
Both plans include free international texting and offer a $15/month
International calling. AT&T’s plan is the best when it comes to data
roaming in Canada and Mexico because you will get unlimited data. Contrary,
Verizon offers two GBs per day of high-speed data in Canada and Mexico.
Perks
Finally, when it comes to perks, Verizon has the most here. You get six months free trials of a bunch of streaming services which to be face is also kind of dangerous. If you forget to cancel your free trials your bill will increase by roughly $28 per month. And in terms of trade-in deals AT&T handily beats the competition. Their entry-level unlimited plan is eligible for up to a full $800 of trade-in credit. Verizon limits their entry-level plans to just $400 of trade-in credit. This is if you are looking at getting a new iPhone 14. It means that AT&T is the cheapest. The $800 phone discount can really save you a lot and after all, taxes, fees, and even a new phone- AT&T’s plan comes out to a total of $70 per month for a single line. This saves you $216 per year compared to Verizon’s plan. For families the same thing is true. AT&T Unlimited Starter will now save you between $140 and $596 per year which is absolutely crazy. So, if you want the best value entry-level unlimited plan AT&T Unlimited Starter is it.
Mid-Level Unlimited Plans
These include Verizon 5G Play More,
AT&T Unlimited Extra. These range from $75 to $80 per month before tax and
around $80 to $86 per month after tax.
Verizon’s plans have the most hotspot
data with 25 gigabytes and AT&T is in second with 15 gigabytes. Verizon
also has the best video streaming quality here allowing up to 720p video with a
4Mbps speed cap. For international features, all plans continue to include free
international texting and offer a $ 15-a-month international calling add-on.
AT&T also continues to have the best roaming in Canada and Mexico with unlimited high-speed data. Verizon and AT&T remain at $10 per day for
their international data add-ons.
In terms of perks, Verizon absolutely
dominates-
5G Play More includes up to $54 in extra
perks and 5G Do More includes up to $71 of extra perks. Of course, you are
paying for these free perks in some sense because Verizon’s plans are the most
expensive. But for some people, these perks can be worth it.
In terms of trade-in credit-
Verizon now
matches AT&T and offers up to you $800 in trade-in credit. If you look at a
full comparison of getting new phones and service, this technically makes
AT&T’s plan the cheapest by approximately $93 per month. And for families
the same thing is true. AT&T’s plan is the cheapest this time by about
$1.76 per line or about $7.04 per month. AT&T does have triple the hotspot
data and better roaming in Canada and Mexico.
Premium Unlimited Data Plans
These include Verizon 5G Get More,
Verizon One Unlimited for iPhone, and AT&T Unlimited Premium. Prices range
from $85 per month to $90 per month before taxes and $85 to almost $97 per
month after taxes.
There all plans include unlimited premium data. Verizon and AT&T tie with the most hotspot data at 50Gigabytes. AT&T is offering full 4K streaming. Verizon unfortunately still limits its premium plans to 720p video streaming when on 5G nationwide or LTE.
If you
are connected to 5G Ultra Wide Band on Verizon you can stream at 4k. But if you
are a big video streamer, you may want to the plan from AT&T. The same free
international texting and $15 a month international calling add-ons are here
from before and what’s new is AT&T’s roaming in Canada and Mexico. They’ve
now expanded this to free roaming in a total of 19 Latin American countries
with their most premium plan. Verizon keeps the roaming options as before.
Verizon and AT&T remain at $10 per day for their international data add-ons
and that brings us to the perks. Here Verizon stuffs their plans with perks more
than you can stuff yourself on a thanksgiving dinner. Here Verizon 5G Get More
is adding a hundred dollars a month in value.
Verizon One Unlimited for i-Phone is
adding about $75 per month value.
As per trade-in deals
All plans now
offer up to $800 in trade-in credit. Again, this is if you’re buying an iPhone
14. This time AT&T's plan is the cheapest. In fact, it ends up being cheaper
than all of the mid-level plans.
My Point of View
Ultimately, the best choice will depend on the individual's specific needs and preferences. It is recommended that readers carefully evaluate and compare the plans offered by both carriers before making a decision.
