Types of Educational Technology

There are three types of educational technology out there, and it can be overwhelming to try to figure out which one is right for you and your students. Here is a quick overview of some of the most popular types of educational technology:

1. Synchronous and Asynchronous

Synchronous learning is when all students are participating in the same activity at the same time. This can be done in person or online. An example of synchronous learning would be a live lecture or seminar. 

Asynchronous learning is when students are not participating in the same activity at the same time. This can be done in person or online. An example of asynchronous learning would be an online course where students can complete the coursework on their own time. 

2. Linear Learning

Linear learning is when students progress through the material in a linear fashion. This can be done in person or online. An example of linear learning would be a traditional classroom setting where the material is presented in a lecture format and students progress through the material at the same pace. 

3. Collaborative Learning

Collaborative learning is when students work together to complete the material. This can be done in person or online. An example of collaborative learning would be a group project where students are assigned to work together to complete the project.

There are many educational technology tools. Each type of tool has its own unique features and benefits, including:

-Classroom management software: This can help teachers keep track of students' progress and assignments.

-Learning Management Systems (LMS): LMS systems can provide a central repository for all course materials and allow students to access them from anywhere. 

These are platforms that allow you to create and deliver online courses. Popular examples include Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle.

-Course authoring software: This software can help instructors create engaging and interactive courses. This can be used to develop and customize courses for delivery online or in the classroom.

-Assessment software: This can be used to create and administer quizzes and exams, as well as track student progress and performance.

-ePortfolios: This can be used by students to showcase their work, reflect on their learning, and share their accomplishments with others.

-Virtual classrooms: Virtual classrooms can provide a flexible and convenient way for students to take courses. This can be used to create a simulated classroom environment for online or blended learning courses.

-E-Learning Content: This includes any digital content that can be used for learning, such as e-books, videos, quizzes, etc. Many times this content is delivered through an LMS or virtual classroom platform.
